OUTLAW DRAG RADIAL ELIMINATOR QUICKEST DRIVERS X275 ELIMINATOR QUICKEST DRIVERS (eighth-mile) (eighth-mile) RANK E.T. in point: the NHRA has effectively maintained turbocharger performance through the distri- bution of its own Boost Controllers which must be utilized in competition, something which few other organizations could effectively police or even afford. At the end of the 2018 season, the quickest elapsed times recorded for the three forms of induction in NHRA/RPM competition featured a spread of no more than thirty-five thousandths of a second from Mike Castella- na’s quickest ever supercharged pass, (5.676 seconds), Rick Hord’s best-ever turbo pass, (5.681 seconds), and Rickie Smith’s nitrous oxide record setter, (5.711 seconds). Numbers seldom seen by most fans, a comparison of eighth-mile performance, bear similar confirmation of the amazing job done by the NHRA rulesmakers in this most difficult of categories. The all-time supercharged mark, 3.734 seconds, is actually held by Jeremy Ray; Mike Janis has run 3.737 and Castellana’s best, (on the 5.679 quarter-mile pass), was 3.743. The NHRA Turbocharged eighth-mile mark in owned by Hord at 3.787 seconds, (on his 5.681 quarter-mile), followed by Sidnei Frigo at 3.793 and Jose Gonzalez at 3.796. While it takes a run of 5.70 seconds to break into the DI NHRA Pro Mod Top Eight, it should be noted that, if the career-best elapsed times of all NHRA/RPM racers are tak- en into consideration, the sixteen-car “dream field” bump spot would be Troy Coughlin’s 5.729. That’s a spread of five hundredths of a second! The field would include seven super- charged entries, six turbocharged machines and three nitrous rigs. Interestingly, those numbers also reflect the percentages of those combinations as overall entries in the NHRA/ RPM program which is capped at thirty-two race teams per event. The rules are complicated but fair. The competition is closer than anybody ever expected. Most importantly, however, is the method to the success. By truly holding each racer responsible through brutal inspections and ever-increasing scrutiny, the National Hot Rod Association has maintained integrity in a class of competition which, as has been proven even in the past season, can so easily be lost.
