SWEET SIXTEEN 2.0:
ONCE IN A LIFETIME?
Among the handful of drag racing statisticians
on the planet, the phrase “Ontario ‘72” is code
for an event which produces broken barriers,
shattered records in every class and perfor-
mances which stand for years. It refers to the
NHRA Supernationals held at Ontario (CA)
Motor Speedway which, courtesy of the sport’s
first real application of traction compound, re-
wrote every standard in the book. Races which
earn that comparison happen only a few times
per century but Donald Long’s second Sweet
Sixteen showdown was one of them.
With perfect weather, phenomenal track
preparation, the world’s strongest cars and
the opportunity to make a dozen runs or more
during the week, Sweet Sixteen 2.0 shuffled
every DI Top 8 Listing for radial tire classes.
Marcus Birt’s astonishing 3.60-second perfor-
mance made the Georgian’s Pat Musi-powered,
Jerry Bickel-built Corvette the eighth-mile’s
quickest nitrous oxide-injected race car of
any kind in any class in any galaxy and the
machine now leads two separate categories.
The staggering 3.57-second blast by Daniel
Pharris’ new Jeffers Race Cars Mustang made
the young Missourian not only the quickest
radial racer ever but put him fifth in the all-
time quickest turbocharged DI Top 8. The 3.58
shot posted by Kevin Rivenbark’s Bickel-built

GALOT ’69 Camaro is now the quickest pass
ever by a supercharged radial racer despite the
shock of a ProCharger centrifugal blower atop
its ProLine powerplant. However, these three
examples fail to illustrate the scope of the
Sweet Sixteen 2.0 performance fest at South
Georgia Motorsports Park.
The SS 2.0 race at Valdosta changed six of
the DI Top 8 positions for the quickest Drag
Radial rides but the event also claimed eigh-
teen of the top twenty-six positions for the
quickest DR drivers. Possibly more impressive
is the fact all but three of the twenty-nine
Radial drivers to ever clock below 3.75 seconds
have done so at SGMP. The track has also been
the site for all but three of the fifteen DR pilots
who have exceed 210 mph.
In X275 competition, SS 2.0 was even
more remarkable. While Rich Bruder and Rob
Goss shared the headlines with magnificent
4.23-second ProCharged passes and Gary
White stunned the world with a 174 mph speed
in the Titan Motorsports X275 turbocharged
six-cylinder Toyota Supra, the meet was
responsible for the shuffling of an incredible
twenty-eight of the top thirty-two positions
in the DI X275 ET standings. In fact, SGMP
has produced all but nine of the forty-one
X275 drivers who have run quicker than 4.40
seconds. Likewise, the race was responsible
for a total of five X275 wheelmen exceeding
170 mph.

Longtime eastern nitrous Pro Modified cam-
paigner Freddy Scriba unleashed the quickest
quarter-mile elapsed time ever recorded for a
nitrous-oxide injected race car at the season
