SUPERCHARGED RADIAL CARS
ROMP AT LIGHTS OUT XI!
Radial cars with screw compressors led the
“numbers parade” which annually emanates
from promoter Donald Long’s Lights Out event
at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Although
not the performance pressure cooker it has
been in recent years, the race still produced
a slew of staggering runs. The race normally
includes almost a dozen qualifying sessions
for the multitude of classes contested but
rain forced the event to be squeezed into a
forty-hour marathon of nonstop action.
Conventionally-supercharged cars stole
the first four slots in qualifying and only three
others cars, two with centrifugal superchargers
and one turbocharged machine, ran under 3.7
seconds in qualifying. In eliminations, how-
ever, Melanie Salemi wheeled her new blown
Camaro to a brutal 3.546, a run which equaled
Stevie “Fast” Jackson’s all-time Radial ET mark
clocked three weeks earlier.
However, it was low qualifier Jackson and
second qualifier David Reese who dropped
jaws with a string of runs through both days
of the event. Jackson led the field with the

only “fifty” before eliminations, a 3.55, and
then assembled a string of 3.58, 3.57, 3.56 and
3.56 runs before a final-round 3.548 which
drove around Reese’s holeshot to grab the
winner’s $50,000 cash prize by a mere three
thousandths of a second.
Reese, meanwhile, was the subject of a
contender for the story of the year. Having ran-
sacked the Unlimited 275 record at the same
track three months earlier, Reese debuted his
new “Diablo”, a PSI screw-blown 2017 Camaro
built in-house at Reese Brothers Chassis which
utilizes a true smallblock Chevy of unique
and secretive design by Reher-Morrison. After
posting a 3.61 to slide behind Jackson second
on the ladder, the car proceeded to become
the quickest smallblock anything anywhere
anytime with a series of 3.585, 3.584, 3.61,
3.580 and 3.594 passes while missing pulling
off the greatest upset in drag radial history by
all of 2.83 feet.
Reese ran an impressive best speed of
206.42 mph while Jackson moved into elite
territory as one of only a handful of super-
charged drivers to clock over 215 mph in the
