4-CYLINDER IN THE 5s
Carl “Top Gun” Brunet screams across the starting line in his Napierville Dragway Pontiac GXP, laying
down his burnout just minutes before a 6.004-second, 232.11 mph pass to beat his own four-cylinder
elapsed time world record. The next night at the World Doorslammer Nationals, Brunet and his GM
Ecotec-powered hot rod dipped in the five-second zone - the first time for a four-cylinder entry -
with a decisive 5.951-second rip. Brunet’s accomplishment understandably made waves throughout
the racing community, as well as electrifying the crowd on hand at Orlando, an import racing hotbed.
