The season-long war between two Switzer Dynamics Pro Nitrous world champions continued at Virginia 2 , where 2016-2017 champion Tommy Franklin won both the qualifying and eliminations battles over defending champion Jim Halsey . Halsey ended up No . 2 in his Fulton-powered ’ 68 Camaro and was secondquickest of the event with his 3.668 on a semifinal bye . Chris Rini qualified third and appeared ready for another semifinal appearance before Rob Hunnicutt ’ s holeshot advantage stopped him in E2 .
Kevin Rivenbark and his Steve Petty-led GALOT Motorsports team continue to prove why they ’ re the defending world champions in Penske / PRS Pro Boost presented by WS Construction , as the two-time champ qualified No . 2 and used a pair of 3.70s to win the first two rounds . He was behind just . 003 at the starting line and another . 008 going down the track in the semis against Jason Harris in a 3.68-second match . Harris wounded his ProChargerboosted “ Party Time ” ’ 15 Camaro on his 3.733 finalround effort next to secondtime finalist Kurt Steding ’ s winning 3.719 . Steding , debuting a new Todd Tutterowtuned P2 Contracting ’ 20 Camaro , ran in the 3.70s all day on his way to his firstever PDRA winner ’ s circle .
After stepping back from a back-to-back championshipwinning Pro Outlaw 632 ride to focus on Liberty ’ s Gears Extreme Pro Stock this season , Johnny Pluchino is chasing yet another title . He put his father ’ s Kaase-powered Strutmasters . com ’ 13 Mustang in the No . 1 qualifying spot for the first time , taking low E . T . and top speed of the event . A pair of holeshot wins , including a 4.119 over Chris Powers ’ 4.103 in the final , helped Pluchino get his third win in four races . Powers played the consistency game , qualifying No . 2 and running 4.127 , 4.119 and a pair of 4.103s in the last two rounds . JR Carr ran two 4.09s but fell to Pluchino ’ s first holeshot in the semis .
$ hameless Racing Pro Outlaw 632 newcomer Jimmy Pelcarsky shook up what was shaping up to be a pretty standard season with his small-block , nitrous-assisted Five-Star Valet ’ 15 Camaro . He vowed to win the race and set a new record after qualifying No . 1 , and he did just that . He went a 4.127 in the semis , cracking Pluchino ’ s two-year-old 4.163 record . Pelcarsky ’ s 4.153 backed up the record and handily defeated Wes Distefano ’ s 4.22 in the Musi-powered $ hameless ’ 68 Camaro . Distefano still holds the points lead , though , after qualifying No . 2 and racing to his fourth final round in as many races . Past world champ Dillon Voss is chasing closely , adding a semifinal finish at Virginia 2 .
Going back to the 2019 World Finals , no one could stop Travis Davis in Drag 965 Pro Nitrous Motorcycle . Drag bike veteran Paul Gast put a stop to the streak at the Summer Shootout , where the 71-yearold rider qualified No . 1 on his Fast By Gast Hayabusa in a last-ditch effort . He struggled a bit in E1 , but he laid down a 4.059 to beat Ashley Owens ’ 4.074 in the semis and a 4.05 to defeat Davis ’ 4.078 in the final . Davis cut a huge holeshot to win first round , then stepped up to a 4.067 to beat Chris Garner- Jones ’ 4.097 in the semis .
