. A . B . What does that stand for ? Actions , Attitudes and Behaviors . I wonder how many people would change the way they acted at certain times in their life . I know I would . In the world of racing , people will remember you – your actions – more than they remember your accomplishments . What that means is they always remember Actions , Attitudes and Behavior of an individual .

Another way to look at this is your Character , Conversation and Conduct , or C . C . C . These all go together and if you study these you can determine what type of person you are dealing with .

Let me give you an example . When I was a kid going to the races , I had my heroes of the dragstrip . These individuals were among the best of the best and I aspired to be like them some day . We had a big event at our local track and two of my dragstrip heroes were there . I stopped by the pit area and couldn ’ t wait to meet them . The funny thing is when I finally did meet them , they were not what the TV had shown .

In the interviews I ’ d seen on TV , these particular heroes were winning , smiling , joking and having a great time . But for most of the time I got to see them at the track , none of those characteristics were present . One of them told me , “ We tell the audience what they want to hear .” And his friend said , “ He ’ s not the angel you see on TV .” Another of my heroes got in a fist fight and said words I had to look up the meaning of to understand .

Now please don ’ t think I am judging . I myself have acted the fool more times than I would like to admit . What I am getting at here is I don ’ t remember anything about that race but the way my heroes acted . I have spoken very candidly about how we should treat others and the truth is that even in our own haste we should always be aware that we are being watched . I once had a few words with myself in private only to turn around and see people standing behind me . Talk about feeling stupid and embarrassed .

Emotions play a huge role here . There are people I know that are so cool they wouldn ’ t melt in Florida in summer . But then there ’ s me . I have been trying to be a better listener and a slower reactor . This may sound easy , and the truth is that it may be for some . As for me , I am a work in progress . I am not where I need to be , but thank the Lord I am not where I used to be .

Another thing is how we handle a situation will either develop or destroy our character . As a business owner , I am constantly doing checks on things that get worked on and sometimes the quality of the work is not up to my standards . I would like to tell you that every time I address the situation I am in a calm and easygoing mood . The truth is , sometimes I find myself being harsh and hurtful towards others while using words I don ’ t normally use . Although I do apologize , I need to make sure my consistent behavior is one of kindness and loving correction .

Character , Conversation , Conduct , Attitudes , Actions and Behaviors all have this in common : They can either make you or break you . I encourage all of you to start looking at yourself in the mirror , and hearing the way you talk and behave , then be honest with yourself about what changes you need to make and make them . You won ’ t be perfect and you will make mistakes , but If you continue to strive for change , it can only benefit you and the people you love . As always , the choice is yours to make . DI
