CAN A PRO MODIFIED RUN 280 MPH IN 1320 FEET ?

February 28 , 2023 , will be the five year anniversary of the quickest and fastest production car quarter-mile pass ever to be made under the title “ Pro Modified ”, “ No Rules Doorslammer ” or just “ Left Hand Drive Automobile ”. It was that date on which Khalid Mohammed unleashed the twin-turbocharged , 522 cubic Chrysler Hemi-powered 2017 Lexus RC F of the eKanoo team at Bahrain International Circuit to clock a 5.379-second quarter-mile at 278.79 miles per hour and steal the all-time records of 5.40 , ( Jose Gonzalez ), and 275.45 mph , ( Eric Dillard ), holding them to the present day .

In the sixty months since the Lexus bombed the quarter-mile record , only one racer has recorded an ET under 5.50 , ( Gonzalez hit 5.49 in a his supercharged Camaro fourteen months ago ), and nobody has come within a tenth of second or with four miles per hour of the Lexus marks .

That may soon change . Under relative secrecy , a machine designed specifically to challenge Mohammed ’ s Lexus for global superiority in the quarter-mile has been under construction and will soon begin testing with the specific goal of running 280 miles per hour in the quarter-mile with a “ door car ”.

Veteran drag racer Marty Palbykin , ( pronounced “ PAL-be-kin ”), is the man with the dream . The retired airline pilot based in Tucson , Arizona , has a spectacular past in the sport . Palbykin , a Pontiac diehard , was one of the first to experiment with twin turbocharging in the early 1990s and his steel-bodied 1970 Pontiac GTO “ Judge ”, in factory black paint and graphics , record a staggering 6.95 at 196 mph in 1996 , astonishing numbers at the time . That same black “ Judge ” was eventually sold – and is still campaigned – by Justin “ Big Chief ” Shearer in No Prep Kings competition . Shearer maintains its original appearance and has changed little from the Palbykin GTO ’ s original configuration .

Palbykin ’ s newest goal , however , required

a completely different approach . He recruited chassis builder Mike Prudhomme , ( no relation to the obvious ), and his Works Of Arc shop in Tucson to assemble a Tim McAmis Race Cars kit package cloaked in a 2019 Corvette body painted a beautiful deep red by Doug Carr .

For the powerplant , Palbykin had renowned engine builder Darrell Makins assemble a 525-inch Noonan Chrysler Hemi , ( using a block with a 4.9- inch bore space ), connected to a Mark Micke-built General Motors Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 threespeed automatic with a lockup converter . For the induction system , Marty was left with little choice . Since no supercharged Pro Modified has ever clocked quicker than 5.42 ( Australian John Zappia ’ s Camaro ), or gone faster than 266.74 mph , ( John and Camp Stanley ’ s Cadillac CTS-V ), it was an easy decision to utilize twin turbochargers when one considers eleven drivers have gone faster than 266 mph using turbos and nine have broken 270 mph . Of course , if turbos were to be utilized and the objective was to set records , Palbykin also had few alternatives but to hire the legendary Shane Tecklenburg to tune the beast .

Tecklenburg is the genius behind barrier-breakers in everything from the Bonneville Salt Flats , ( where he is a technician on the fastest piston-engined vehicle on Earth at 481.576 mph ), to drag racing , where he tuned Ebrahim Kanoo ’ s team cars to over three dozen records culminating in Khalid Mohammed ’ s 5.37 / 278 which , of course , in Palbykin ’ s target .
