Johnny Camp is Quickest of Them All in Pro Mod Qualifying
Johnny Camp claimed the No . 1 qualifying spot at the Word Series of Pro Mod right out of the gate on Friday . In his ProCharged “ Hells Bells ” ‘ 69 Camaro , Camp cracked off a 3.647 at 204.82 in the first session and then improved to a 3.626 at 205.91 Friday night . “ We came out and made a good pass with a brand-new motor combination ,” said Camp , referring to his Camaro that Brandon Stroud tunes . “ We ’ re tickled with the results so far . That last one was a good number , but we were biting nails all the way through the [ second ] round .”
After Friday night qualifying , Camp wasn ’ t resting on his laurels after claiming the No . 1 spot and besting 61 cars on the property at Bradenton Motorsports Park . “ There are two more rounds to go , so we ’ re not overconfident , but we feel we ’ ve got a pretty good number ,” Camp said , standing in his pits Friday night .
Saturday night , Camp had a target on his back going into rounds three and four of qualifying . Only 32 cars would make the field , and Camp wasn ’ t ready to give up the No . 1 spot . The Pennsylvania-based driver was consistent , laying down a 3.630 at 206.01 on his last qualifying pass .
“ It ’ s unbelievable ,” Camp said , a regular No . 1 qualifier in PDRA Pro Boost . “ We came in here with this new motor package , not knowing anything about it . It ’ s a good car , and I ’ ve got a good team with me .”
In addition to writing his name in the WSOPM history books as the 2023 No . 1 qualifier , Camp also picked up the $ 10,000 Mike Janis Superchargers Low Qualifier Bonus and the $ 2,500 bonus from Gene Pilot and Pilot Racing .
“ The $ 10,000 is a nice little bonus , and it ’ s just a privilege to be invited here to this big event , and it ’ s been all-around really good ,” continued Camp . “ This [ motor package ] is just a twinge better than the other stuff .”
Camp was prepared for the chip draw that paired him with Kenny Lang in round one . “ It ’ s not like a regular race where you get your number one ; you get 16 . You don ’ t know who you ’ re going to get on the property . There ’ s a lot of luck in racing , good fortune , and good preparation ,” said Camp , who was eliminated by Lang ’ s 3.735 at 202.88 MPH . – KAYLA ZADEL DI
