NEOPMA founder and president announces retirement By Nate Van Wagnen
John Mazzorana , a former banking executive who has run the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association ( NEOP- MA ), for the last 32 years , announced September 26th his retirement from his role as president and founder of the organization . Mazzorana intended to announce his retirement during the NEOPMA season finale at Maryland International Raceway ’ s Superchargers Showdown , but the event was cancelled due to a poor weather forecast . The 83-year-old Mazzorana issued an open letter to the racers , fans , sponsors , track owners , and other stakeholders that have been involved with NEOPMA over its 30-plus-year run .
“ It seems like yesterday that I started the NEOPMA ,” Mazzorana said . “ It ’ s been 32 years of love , frustration , aggravation , fun , and friendship . Despite all the stomach acidity and thankless times , I still think of our racers as friends , family , and some cases even like my brothers or children . I will miss you guys , but promise to stay in touch .”
Mazzorana went on to explain that four main factors led to his decision to retire .
“ Several of the clubs ’ staunchest racer / sponsors

have either stopped racing , moved on to other organizations , or simply moved . One of my major reasons for running the club was the comrades / friendship and fun I have with you all .
“ Recently my health has become of real concern and makes it difficult to me to give 100 % effort to do a good job . I hope to be somewhat better early next year .
“ The Pro Mod world is becoming cluttered with big-dollar events , lots of associations with

numerous events , and less cars per event . Difficult to successfully compete . It ’ s not uncommon to see $ 50,000 purses ( now $ 150,000 ) causing drivers to move on to other programs . On the other hand , Pro Mods are finally getting recognition .”
Mazzorana indicated that his retirement doesn ’ t necessarily mean the end of NEOPMA and that he ’ s interested in finding someone to take over his position .
“ I would like [ NEOPMA ] to continue and prosper , so I ’ ve been trying to find a suitable replacement , but to no avail ,” Mazzorana said . “ Some of the best candidates understand the time and dedication required but cannot commit . Others simply do not have the drive , desire , or skill set needed to assure ongoing success . Frankly , this is a quandary . Anyone interested , please contact me .”
Mazzorana ’ s letter also shared credit with the NEOPMA team , including Mark Tinari , Dennis Quitoni , Jimmy and “ Long Island Donna ” Curci , Mel Jones , and livestream provider Jay “ NC ProModer ” Warren .
