D. I. COLUMNIST The Real Deal with Tommy D ' Aprile
How many of you find yourself hurrying throughout the day? Sometimes it just seems like no matter how much time is in a day, you just can’ t seem to get things done, so you start hurrying around trying to make up time. I find myself doing this from time to time without even realizing it.
Just the other day, I left work and decided to go the back way home, thinking it would be quicker. Well, it usually is quicker – until you forget to stop at the stop sign and get pulled over. I was fortunate enough to get off with just a warning, but it made me realize that I needed to slow down. That’ s a hard thing for a drag racer.
As I patiently waited for the officer to come back to my window, it gave me time – although forced time – to think about how I needed to just slow down. I still had plenty of time in my day to get things done, but I thought if I rushed around it would be better. How many of you struggle with this daily?
The truth is that rushing never accomplishes anything but brings more stress and problems to you. It takes discipline to pause and realize you need to take a time-out. Although this may sound childish, it is very important that you do so to improve the quality of your life.
When I started to accept the fact that some days I just won’ t get it all done, it really took a load off. All we do is run around trying to get everything done in a day so we can just start over the next. I’ m not saying you should be lazy and not plan your day out, but what I am saying is that sometimes the day just doesn’ t turn out the way you’ d like – and when that happens, we have the choice to stress out and rush, or take a moment and refocus to just get done what you can.
The saying“ tomorrow is another day” is a good one. Here is another:“ Rome wasn’ t built in a day.” If we constantly chase deadlines without a moment to breathe, how are we going to have any peace in our day? That’ s the question you have to ask yourself.
In the fast-paced world of today, are you taking moments out of your day to just enjoy the moment? Sometimes all it takes is a quick minute to remind yourself how lucky you are. Don’ t compare yourself with other people – just be grateful for where you are and slow down a bit.
Sometimes, if you are running late to the staging lanes, it becomes a mad dash of trying to get in the car and get ready for the run. No team likes doing that – it interrupts procedures and can lead to mistakes. Much like the staging lanes of life, rush too much and you might miss the pass of a lifetime.
Be consistent and aware of when hurry and rush are stealing your peace, and make a change. As always, the choice is yours to make! DI
