D. I. COLUMNIST The Real Deal with Tommy D ' Aprile
Just the other day, I received a phone call from a good friend of mine. He called to ask me how I was doing and to let me know he was thinking of me. We talked for a while, and I can honestly say that it was a fantastic conversation. It led me to think about phone calls.
How many of you take time out of your day to call someone just to say you were thinking of them? The truth is, most of the calls we make and receive are about wanting something in return. Just think about that for a minute. We call to ask a favor, place an order, schedule an appointment, etc. Our phone calls are more businesslike than ever.
And how many of our calls start with something like this:“ Did you hear about...?” We have breaking news or gossip we want to share, but seldom truly care about who we called, just what we can spread or get out of the conversation.
I have been one to call people on a regular basis just to see how they are doing, and I always get the same response. They say how nice it was and also seem surprised that I didn’ t truly need anything from them. My only concern is genuinely for their well-being.
Truth be told, we are all a little selfish when it comes to making a selfless phone call. We say we are going to do it, but seldom ever do. If you spent a fraction of the time you spend on social media reaching out to someone, the effects could be life-changing for you and the person you reached out to.
You may be a popular and busy person, but there are people who are alone, and you could make their day just by reaching out. I encourage all of you to do what most will not: put others ahead of yourself and reach out to someone today. Put random notes on your phone to remind yourself to make calls. Even if you don’ t feel like it, just do it.
I can tell you from experience that it is an amazing feeling to let someone know you care about them. This is such a small gesture that can have a lifelong impact. Teach your children, tell your friends, and start making those calls – not texts. Texts are in no way the same as a genuine phone call.
Spread the good news that you care and start today! As always, the choice is yours to make. DI
