THE FIRST OF MANY
Moments away from hoisting an NHRA national event Wally for the first time, Ron Capps does his burnout across the Pacific Raceways starting line in the Roger Primm Racing Top Fuel dragster. Though now known as one of the most accomplished Funny Car drivers in the history of the class, Capps made his professional debut in Top Fuel. His first win came at the 1995 NHRA Northwest Nationals, and because of persistent rain, the final round between Capps and Cory McClenathan wasn’ t settled until Tuesday. McClenathan in the iconic McDonald’ s dragster went up in smoke, while Capps powered on for the win, avenging his final-round loss to Cory Mac at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta earlier in Capps’ rookie season. Now 30 years into his nitro racing career, Capps is a three-time Funny Car world champion with 80 national event victories, a two-time team owner, and the driver next in line to join fellow Funny Car driver John Force and Pro Stock’ s Greg Anderson in the 1,000-Round Win Club.
