The Amazing 2016 Funny Car Phenomenon!
The performance revolution of the NHRA’ s supercharged, nitro-burning Funny Cars has continued unabated into the 2016 season and the new standards continue to astonish. The same wave of horsepower has changed the complexion of NHRA fuel racing this year with a trend previously unseen in fuel racing.
Although it has happened on occasion for the past third of a century, the odds now favor a Funny Car earning Top Speed of the Meet honors at any given NHRA Mello Yello National Event. In 2015, it last occurred at the NHRA AAA Insurance Midwest Nationals at Madison( IL) where Matt Hagan’ s best of 330.47 mph beat out Dave Connelly’ s 329.99 effort. In 2016, however, a Funny Car has been the fastest machine on the property at five of ten completed events at presstime and achieved an extremely rare tie for the honors at the recent NHRA
Summernationals at Englishtown( NJ). A new burst of speed stunned onlookers when exceptional weather conditions greeted racers for the Kansas Nationals at the resurrected Heartland Park Topeka facility and, in a season during which no driver in any class had exceeded 330 mph to that point,( and only one Funny Car driver in history, Matt Hagan, had ever exceeded 330 mph), a total of seven Funny Car drivers recorded twelve runs over 330 mph en route to Hagan posting one of the most important milestones in drag racing history. In Topeka, Hagan clocked the quickest thousand-feet FC elapsed time ever at 3.862 seconds but his terminal velocity of 335.57 mph eclipsed Mike Ashley’ s nine-year and one month-old 334.32 mph all-time best Funny Car speed … for the QUARTER-MILE.
It should be noted the event also produced the second-quickest Top Fuel ET ever,( and a new NHRA National Record), at 3.676 seconds
