330 mph. However, all three performances
were far outshone by Hagan becoming the first
driver to topple a quarter-mile speed record in
three-quarters of the distance while making a
Funny Car the sport’s speed king by 1.42 miles
per hour.
Of interest was the fact the eighth-mile
Funny Car speed record was also obliterated
when Tim Wilkerson’s Levi, Ray & Shoup
Shelby Mustang hit 284.69 mph on a 333.64
mph thousand-feet pass.
While the Virginian Hagan’s mighty Mopar
Express Lane/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger and
its crewchief, Dickie Venables, left the sport
in shock, the NHRA quickly responded to the
amazing 1.2% increase in the NHRA FC World
Speed Record with a rules revision which
allowed engine timing retardation to begin
150 RPM earlier during a run in an attempt
to decrease the finish line speed. At the next
event, the NHRA New England Nationals at
Epping (NH), Wilkerson still clocked 330.63
mph on a pass in which his eighth-mile speed
was 284.03 mph. Moreover, Ron Capps drove
his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger to the
second-quickest thousand-feet ET ever at
3.865 seconds while recording the quickest
eighth-mile FC ET yet at 3.121 seconds. One
week later, Capps clocked an astonishing
3.115-second eighth while on a 3.870 effort!
After so many years of stagnation, one can
only hope this latest Funny Car performance
renaissance will remain the source of such
excitement for the class for the foreseeable
future.

Drag Radial Top 8!
Not many people dreamed it could still happen
but Stevie “Fast” Jackson’s destruction of the
Drag Radial World ET Record at NorthStar
Dragway at Denton (TX) may be the most
controversial run of the season to date. While
the pass was heavily hyped and received
a massive amount of electronic publicity,
Jackson’s nitrous oxide-injected 959 cubic inch
Reher-Morrison-powered 1969 Camaro is now
a full half-tenth quicker than any other Radial
rig. It now takes a “three-eighty” just to be
listed in the Drag Illustrated Top 8!
The New NHRA Pro Stocks
are Closing the Gap!
As the fuel-injected NHRA Pro Stockers head
to their eleventh race of the season, nine
drivers have now dipped under 6.6 seconds
and nine have eclipsed 210 mph. Moreover, the
cars are now within a mere fifty-eight thousandths of a second and 2.62 mph of the best
performances of the machines in their previous
carbureted incarnations.
Kincaid Becomes the
New 275 Speed King!
Battling the biggest names in Outlaw 275
racing at North Carolina’s Shadyside Dragway,
Tim Kincaid’s twin-turbocharged bigblock
Chevy-powered 1993 Mustang unleashed a
190.35 mph speed to break Billy Gordon’s two
year-old eighth-mile record for cars with 10.82inch rear tires. Tennessean Kincaid’s Precision
Turbo & Engine/Rossler Transmissions machine
is also one of the prime contenders to unseat
David Pearson’s reign at the top of the Outlaw
275 ET list.
