The Margin Continues to Shrink!
In the last issue of DI, we recounted the few times during the sport’ s history in which a margin of two-tenths of a second or less separated the quickest Top Fuel Dragster run and the best Funny Car elapsed time. Credit Matt Hagan with closing the gap to an incredible sixteen hundredths of a second when he pushed his Mopar Express Lane / Rocky Boots 2016 Dodge Charger to an astounding 3.822-second effort during the recent NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals in Brainerd( MN).
For the second straight year, amazing atmospheric conditions permitted record-setting runs and Hagan’ s 333.82 mph top speed made a mockery of the recent attempts by NHRA technical inspectors to slow the Funny Cars after Hagan’ s 335.57 mph blast at Topeka( KS) in May officially made FCs faster than their TF counterparts for only the third time in history. When the sanctioning body announced new rules to lower the RPM limit on the FC powerplants and forced teams to simultaneously reduce engine timing, it was hoped to keep the cars below 330 mph.
Drag racing’ s two premiere classes are now closer in performance than at any time except
1982,( 0.153 seconds), and 1971,( 0.113 seconds). However, testing at Clermont( IN) prior to the 62nd annual Chevrolet Performance U. S. Nationals has increased to nine the number of Top Fuelers which have clocked under 3.7 seconds and Shawn Langdon’ s now fifty-three week-old 3.662-second TF performance mark is assumed to be in jeopardy.
It should also be noted the Funny Car performance mark has dropped an incredible 3.3 % since December 8, 2014, when Hagan finally broke Robert Hight’ s 2007 record for the 1000-feet distance,( clocked during a quarter-mile 4.63-second pass), by one thousandth of a second. For comparison, NHRA Pro Stockers would need to drop twenty-one hundredths of a second in the same twenty-one month period.
Megan Makes Her Mark!
At the same NHRA Brainerd race, second-generation driver Megan Meyer’ s fuel-injected, nitromethane-burning digger not only posted stunning Top Alcohol Dragster passes of 5.178 and 5.179 seconds but also earned the fastest eighth-mile speed ever for a naturally-aspirated engine.
