Jason Rupert, another racer who was introduced to the sport at birth, claimed complete ownership of the Nostalgia Funny Car records en route to his third consecutive IHRA Funny Car World Championship. One month after obliterating his own 262.39 mph AA/FC speed record with a mind-numbing 269.30 mph blast at the IHRA stop in Edmonton, Alberta, the Californian won the 2016 title at the IHRA Summer Nationals in Martin (MI) with a stunning series of runs culminating in a 5.522 to erase 2016 NHRA Heritage Series AA/FC Champion Kris Krabill’s 5.552 set at Bakersfield (CA) in March. The Lucas Oil/Rupert & Littlefield ’69 Camaro seems unbeatable but still has several 2016 appearances remaining. In an interview with DI Editor Wes Buck at the recent PDRA National Event at Memphis (TN) International Raceway, Jason Scruggs confirmed a rumored 5.52-second quarter-mile clocked during testing at Bradenton (FL) Motorsports Park earlier in 2016. Scruggs coasted across the 1320-feet finish line with parachutes fully blossomed after a successful eighth-mile pass and the timeslip showed a 5.527 at a mere 201.25 mph. However, nobody should be surprised by the numbers. It must be noted Frankie Taylor’s current 5.476-second Unlimited Pro Modified quarter-mile record came with a relatively tame 3.616/209.72 eighth-mile. Scruggs’ 5.52 “shut-off” came after a 3.538/216.91 eighth. Using conventional conversion formulas for a supercharged, alcohol-burning, suspended race car with a torque converter, Scruggs 660feet numbers offer a quarter-mile projection of 5.357/272.81. Moreover, Scruggs’s ’69 Camaro was still under power at the thousand-feet mark where it posted a 4.528. For those who find these performances difficult to grasp, compare them to the second-quickest Top Alcohol Funny Car run of all time, Australian Gary Phillips’ 5.360, (at 269.83 mph), from February. His Lucas Oil 2011 Monte Carlo ran 3.552 at 216.21mph to the eighth and 4.527 seconds to one thousand feet.
