Global Quarter-Mile Warfare Among Doorslammers !
In a battle for the ages , a worldwide war for ownership of the outright records for passenger automobiles has captured the attention of drag racing enthusiasts . Over a brief period of sixteen days , the elapsed time record for Unlimited Pro Modified racecars changed three times among drivers from three different countries … none of which were the United States .
After starting the year with runs as quick as 5.50 seconds at an all-time speed record of 277.99 miles per hour , driver Khalid Mohammed and car owner Ebrahim Kanoo ’ s twin-turbocharged 521 cubic inch ProLine-powered 2017 Lexus RC F pulled to the starting line at its home track in Bahrain with a Shane Tecklenburg tune-up developed specifically to retake the eighteen month-old 5.46-second World ET record held by the twin-turbocharged ‘ 69 Camaro of Kuwait ’ s Turki al Zafiri . The result was a stupendous 5.445 at mere 273.86 mph . The elation in the EKanoo camp , responsible for almost a dozen world records in a variety of categories during
the 2017 Arabian Drag Racing Series , lasted for a mere fifteen days when , at the Valdosta , Georgia , season-opener for the Professional Drag Racing Association , special permission was granted for a quarter-mile attempt to beat the EKanoo record .
The pilot was Jose Gonzalez , the Dominican Republican responsible for the quickest eighth-mile pass ever for a turbocharged machine , in his newest “ El General ” entry , a Jerry Bickel Race Cars-built 2017 Corvette with another twin-turbo ’ d ProLine Hemi . After a test run which produced an early shut-off dip into the 5.50s , Gonzalez made a second pass which also failed to reach the finish line under power but still recorded a staggering 5.403 at a coasting 259.71 mph .
Interestingly , Mohammed and Gonzalez displayed similar eighth-mile performances on their record runs , ( 3.683 / 219.23 for the Lexus and 3.62 / 219.47 from the Corvette ), leaving no question a full pass by Gonzalez would ’ ve resulted in a 5.3-second run at well over 270 mph . However , it should be noted NEITHER team is anywhere NEAR the current
