THE GREATEST
GATORNATIONALS EVER?
In the first thirty years of its storied half-cen-
tury of existence, the NHRA Gatornationals
regularly shattered the sport’s records with
a combination of a sea level atmosphere and
a track surface into which was incorporated
jagged sea shells. Through the twenty-first
century, however, the numbers which emanat-
ed from what is truly one of drag racing’s “big
four” events were, more often than not, less
than expected. That all changed at the gala
anniversary celebration in 2019 when the race
combined nearly perfect conditions and an ex-
ceptional new concrete surface to completely
rewrite the DI Top 8 lists.
Even counting the Top Fuel and Funny Car
Eliminators which are now limited by modern
preparation restrictions, (keeping TF low
elapsed times to a stunning spread of only
twenty-three thousandths of a second in the
year’s first three programs), racers left the
event with eight of a possible eighteen new
NHRA National Records in nine competition
categories. No class was brutalized like Pro
Modified Eliminator in which the final round is
already being hailed as one of the great races
of the century.

When Todd Tutterow’s 5.662 holeshot
Stevie ”Fast” Jackson’s 5.643 in Qatar-ver-
sus-Bahrain race which boasted a worst reac-
tion time of 0.036, the two jumped to the top
of the NHRA Pro Modified ET Top 8. Jackson’s
pass broke into the DI Top 8 ET List for ALL
supercharged doorslammers. Eleven of the top
twenty-two positions on the DI PM ET list were
revised and the NHRA class now includes a
staggering ten drivers under 5.70 seconds and
twenty-two under 5.73!
In fact, the new ET “record” for each
NHRA-legal Pro Modified combination was
revised at the 2019 Gators. Jackson’s ’68
Camaro became the quickest supercharged
entry, (5.643), Jose Gonzalez’s ProLine-pow-
ered 2016 Camaro is now the quickest NHRA
turbo car, (5.672), and Khalid al Balooshi’s
2017 Camaro is now the nitrous oxide-injected
performance leader, (5.710). Likewise, Gon-
zalez missed the fastest speed ever recorded
for the class by a mere six tenths of a mph,
(259.31 mph), while Balooshi clocked the
second-fastest nitrous speed ever, (252.85).
One unofficial “record” which went unnoticed
during the event was the all-time fastest NHRA
Pro Modified eighth-mile speed clocked by
Alex Laughlin’s twin-turbo’d 2018 Corvette
