on a 5.77/258.82 qualifying run yet missed the
record 5.748 “bump spot”!
Other classes featured mind-numbing runs,
as well. In Top Alcohol Funny Car, 2017 NHRA
World Champ Sean Bellemeur waited until the
final round to unleash a 5.352-second blast
from his BAE-powered Hussey Performance/
Red Line-backed 2017 Camaro which erased
the twenty-eight month-old mark set by
Australian John Canulli. The 2016 Camaro of
returning Texas NHRA Pro Stock veteran Roger
Brogdon produced the division’s quickest
elapsed time in the past two seasons, (6.480),
and NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle saw both
ends of the class record shattered by Andrew
Hines’ Harley-Davidson Street Rod, (6.720),
and Matt Smith’s EBR-Buell, (201.76). The
Vance & Hines Harley broke its own 6.728 re-
cord which stood longer than any other active
NHRA record other than Top Alcohol Dragster,
a total of six years and five months.
Another record romp came in the NHRA’s
School of Automotive Machinists Factory Stock
Showdown in which twenty-three of thirty-one
qualifying hopefuls ran under eight seconds
and each automotive manufacturer gained
all-time bests for their wares. In Ford Mustangs,
eventual winner Drew Skillman, (7.713), and
Paul Roderick, Jr., (179.33), led the overall
numbers while the best from Chevy Camaros
came from Randy Taylor, (7.828), and Arthur
Kohn, (177.93). The Dodge Challengers were
topped by 2017 FSS World Champion Leah
Pritchett, (7.852/173.21). It should be noted
Drew Skillman pushed his Mustang Cobra Jet
to a 7.704 in the NMCA’s identical Factory Su-
per Car eliminator during their season-opener
at Bradenton (FL) two weeks earlier.

Mendy Fry is one of the few true superstars in
the competitive end of drag racing’s nostalgia
niche but her performance during the 2019
Good Vibrations March Meet at the fabled
Auto Club Famoso (CA) Raceway will forever
ensure her place in the sport’s record books.
At the helm of the High Speed Motorsports
front-engined Top Fuel Dragster operated col-
orful California pioneers Tom Shelar and Walt
Stevens, the lady from Santa Rosa opened
eliminations with a 5.518-second blast which
returned the FEDs to the top of the Nostalgia
pack after trailing the performances of Nos-
talgia Funny Cars and even alcohol-burning
Altereds since 2017.
Using a 417 Donovan, (the original alumi-
num replacement block for the venerable 392
Chrysler Imperial Hemi), with a variety of High
Speed’s own handmade replacement parts, Fry
returned for the semi-finals and rocketed to
the first sub-5.50 pass for any Nostalgia vehi-
cle, a 5.490. A broken throttle linkage kept the
defending NHRA Heritage Series TF Champion
from meeting Adam Sorokin in the final round
but Mendy Fry will always retain the notoriety
of the first FED “forty”.
