Adam Hull Becomes 15th Stick Shift Nationals Champion
By Van Abernethy
North Carolina’ s Farmington Dragway once again hosted the popular Stick Shift Nationals on June 14, with racers pouring in from 15 different states to compete in the 15th running of this exciting annual event. Not only has the Stick Shift Nationals become the largest, most prestigious clutch car gathering around, but the mystique seems to only grow larger with each passing year since no racer has ever won the main event twice in the event’ s 15- year history!
But before Saturday’ s main event gets underway, racers have the chance to get familiar with Farmington’ s eighth-mile surface during the Scarlette’ s Performance gambler’ s race, which drew 91 entries on Friday night. Andy Charcalla, who’ s enjoyed great success over the years at this event, once again parked his Pennsylvania-based 1986 Ford Mustang in the winner’ s circle on Friday after he got past the Chevy Camaro of Virginia’ s Rodney Price. The lone semifinalist was Jamie Campbell in his 1967 Chevy Nova.

After a hard-fought seven rounds of eliminations on Saturday, Mt. Airy, North Carolina’ s Adam Hull met Brad Smith in the thrilling finals after their semifinal victories over Ricky Pennington and Brandon White, respectively. Smith, who hails from Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, was wheeling the gorgeous“ Day Dreamer” Corvette of the late Gary Mckee, and left a fraction too early(. 001) handing the victory to Hull, driving the 1967 Camaro that belongs to his dad, Bill.
